Earlier today an email was sent to many within the student body calling on Danny Akin, the President of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, to explain why he is allowing or enabling the institution to adopt liberation theology in some of its curriculum.

Attached to the email was this document entitled, “Political Agenda in the SBC”

Subject: A Public Letter to Dr. Akin from Concerned Students

Good Morning Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary,

I want to thank all of you who have stood behind me, and more importantly, you who have stood for Jesus. Brothers and sisters, your sacrifice arises as a pleasing aroma to God!

Dr. Akin, it is with great respect for your office that I write this to you in the face of my fellow brothers and sisters, students and faculty.

Your office is one of service to us, the church of Jesus Christ, and as such, it has become necessary for you to answer publicly to all of us concerning the information in the attached document. This is not a matter between you and me. It is rather a matter between you, us as students, and also much of your own faculty.

If there is one thing I have learned in the Hunt Scholar pastoral program, it is that a man of God must be strong and stand for the truth. And so, I speak on behalf of very many of us here at Southeastern, many who are very concerned about where you are leading us. I trust that this school is not in the business of policing speech, and I also submit this to you in good hope that if you do love the Lord, you and others will refrain from attempting any character assassination or other action which would be offensive to our Lord.

If you are involved in this scheme described in the attached document, I am now, along with many others, calling upon you to peacably resign. If you are not, then I believe that we as students, faculty, and churches, deserve a detailed explanation for these things.

I have included a prayer below also to encourage my brothers and sisters. And please, do not worry or fear. There are occassions when things like this become necessary in the church, and so we must be careful to strive for unity in the truth. Remember that in situations like this, those who are void of love do show their colors before all, so I urge you to walk in love, but not at the expense of the truth.

Thank you,
Thomas Bluemling

A PRAYER FOR AWAKENING
May the grace of God be upon all of our brothers and sisters in Christ and may our Lord fill you with all knowledge and wisdom by His Holy Spirit according to the will of God. I bless you and pray that God would conform you to the image of His Son, bringing you to the fullness of the unity of the bride of Christ by His power working in you and through you, that you may bring glory to God through your obedience to His Word. May you enter into His eternal kingdom of righteousness, joy, and peace dwelling in the glorious presence of God in the company of His angels and saints forever. Amen.

I pray that God will bless God’s under shepherds with wisdom, grace, and knowledge being filled with the Holy Spirit in humility, meekness, and fear shepherding the flock of our Lord Jesus Christ and guiding them in the Lord unto the Lord. May they fear no man, but only God, for we read in Proverbs that the wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion. And we know that we did not receive a spirit of bondage again to fear but we have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out Abba Father. May God our Father fill our preachers with boldness that they may preach the word in season and out of season teaching, exhorting, comforting, correcting, rebuking in the love of Jesus Christ which has been displayed upon the cross.

I pray that the church of Christ would strive for holiness, for we are told that without holiness, we will not see God. May we all stand against sin, for many in our day use God’s forgiveness and grace as an excuse to sin, but what does the Scripture say? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness. Yes, I pray that everyone among you would understand the deception and danger of living in the continuous and unrepentant practice of sin. For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, As it is written Every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

For many boast that we are no longer under the law and have freedom in Christ—but I fear that these are in great error, for in Matthew 7, we read that on judgment day when Christ turns away those false converts, He says I never knew you, you who practice lawlessness. They were lawless people who thought they were saved. Does not the apostle Paul say in Romans 7, So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God? And does he not also say, for I delight in the law of God according to the inward man? Of course we know that we are not under the law, but that simply means that we are not under the obligation to fulfill the law perfectly, nor under the condemnation of it. For if our Lord had not died in our place for our sins, then even just one sin would have sufficed to send us to hell, for the Scripture says the wages of sin is death. But as the Scripture tells us, what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin; He condemned sin in the flesh that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. What a beautiful statement! Death has lost its sting! We have been bought back from horrors of death and separation from God, and now grafted into this tree of eternal life!

Now that Christ has fulfilled the righteous requirement of the law, we are no longer under the condemnation of the law, for the Scripture says that as through one man’s offense, judgment came to all men resulting in condemnation, even so, through one Man’s righteous act, the free gift came to all men resulting in justification of life. Praise the Lord our God, the author of this great salvation! Praise Jesus Christ for His everlasting mercy! Now brethren, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, those who are the true children of our Lord following Him in Spirit and truth obeying from a fervent heart in diligence and love; As the Scriptures say Do this knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. And remember that the Word tells us that if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Therefore we must cast away those secret sins which linger among us, which are chains pulling us back into bondage, for the apostle Paul says I see another law at work in my members warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. So then, even we who are temples of the living God have the flesh nature at work in us, a fountain of evil desire—selfishness, pride, lust, greed. We know from the book of James that when we act upon those evil desires and practice them, it can only end in death, and to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Therefore let us encourage one another to look at sin through the light of God’s word exposing it for the vile thing it is. Let us no longer enjoy and dwell on those enticing thoughts which so often deceive us, making us to believe that they are of no harm. Let us not only fight sin as it attacks, but let us build the walls of Jerusalem in our hearts by obeying the word, for it is written that we must continue steadfastly in prayer and again in the book of Jude that we are to build up our most holy faith praying in the Spirit. But at the very onset of evil desire, let us not simply attempt to avoid the thoughts. Let us take them out, denounce them using the word of God until they are shown before our eyes to be the vile thing which they truly are. Many speak of being led by the Spirit, but the Scripture says that those who are led by the Spirit of God are those who are putting to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit.

I fear that many of us do not understand the gospel, for there are many who say the gospel is Jesus, the gospel is that Jesus loves you, the gospel is shown by how we act, the gospel can be different for each of us. Brothers and sisters in Christ, we must understand the gospel! 1 Corinthians 15 tells us that the gospel is that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised again! This is the gospel. And Romans 1:16 tells us that the gospel is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes. But as the Scripture says, How then shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard. And how shall they hear without a preacher. Remember that we are saved by grace through faith according to Ephesians 2, and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God! Therefore, we must be obedient to the great commission, and according to Mark 16, we must preach! And if we are to tell men that Christ died for their sins, let us explain to them what sin is, for we are told that sin is transgression of the law. We must tell men that they are guilty of breaking the law of God. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

If sin is breaking God’s law, then surely we must tell them about this law they have broken. The Ten Commandments. Have you ever lied? Have you every stolen? Have you every lusted, for this is adultery according to Jesus. In Ezekiel 18, God says that the soul who sins shall die. No wonder that the prophets spoke the truth as warnings and not just friendly invitations (2 Chronicles 36:15). Did not John the Baptist warn men to flee from the wrath to come? John 3:36 tells us that the wrath of God abides on unsaved men. We must warn them in love! We must help them to understand the eternal horrors that await those who die in their sins, that they might repent, turning (in their hearts) from serving their selfish and sinful lusts to serving the Lord Jesus Christ. The Scriptures tell us that godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, but I fear that the gospel of today’s church is altogether another. We have despised the soul-shaking power of the true gospel for a counterfeit love which would not warn someone even if they were walking off a cliff. I fear that we comfort their souls into hell.

Lastly, I must say that the end is near, in only a breath for us all. Eternity will echo with the words and actions we choose this day. We read that he who saves souls is wise. What does this say of those who do not save souls. If those who save souls leading men to Christ will shine like the brightness of the stars forever, what does this say about those who never share the gospel of Christ? Those who hide their light under the basket…I fear that the church building has become that basket. We go to church all the time praising God and seeking him, but we often forget or refuse to share the way of salvation with those around us. I fear that there will be great judgment for those who are disobedient to Christ and who refuse to confess Him before men. For those who are cowardly bending to the depraved morals of this fallen world. Does not the apostle John tell us that the whole world lies in wickedness? Are we not instructed, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. We are commanded to go into all the world and to preach the gospel to every creature, to make disciples of all nations. We are told that the gospel will be preached in all the world, and then the end will come.

May the man who has obtained this great salvation—a gift which he did not earn or deserve, the man who has been forgiven of all his sins, the man who has received the gift of the Holy Spirit and the grace of God and who will not share it with another, who will not even reach out his hand to those who are quickly sinking down into hell weeping in horrifying regret, may that man take heed and consider his ways.

I pray that all of us may be awakened this day to our reasonable service—to offer our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God. May the abundant grace of our great God shine upon you working in and through you, that you may serve Him in fear and reverence reaching unto Him for your very sustenance and breath—the Word of God. For He is the vine and we are the branches. May we realize our inability, and in that realization, may His power be shown, and His name glorified forever. Amen.
